After the 2021 Golden Globes edition, the event gave us a reason to reconsider the award as worthwhile and think about its short life as a main event in the Awards Season Calendar.
NBC didn’t broadcast the 79th Golden Globes this year and not only that. There were a few controversies about the diversity of the membership and corruption in the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the small group of international journalists who vote on the awards).
What are the Golden Globes?
The Golden Globes is one of the most important awards shows because it gives us – or, at least, used to give – a preview of the Oscars winners.
Held at the Beverly Hills Hotel, this years’ Golden Globes had only selected HFPA members and awardees in attendance. The controversies led to NBC’s decision to not broadcast this year’s ceremony. The private event announced the audience on social media, and through their website.
The Golden Globes’ Controversies
The Los Angeles Times was investigating the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for potential conflicts of interest. The Netflix series Emily in Paris got some negative critics since its debut but got two Golden Globes nominations last year, for TV series (comedy or musical) and the best actress in a TV series (comedy or musical) for Lily Collins, after 30 members of the HFPA visited the set in France in 2019.
Even before the investigation, people considered the nominations suspicious, because the show was ‘cringy’, incompetent and racist for some.
This is not the only controversy.
Do we know how hard they are trying not to be racist? Well, maybe not trying enough.
In March 2021, a strategic diversity advisor was hired to make at least 13% of the membership black. Not only being a small percentage, but the Deadline also reported that a member and former eight-term from HFPA Philip Berk sent an email sharing an article saying that Black Lives Matter is a “racist hate movement.” Berk was expelled, and the crisis communications firm and diversity consultant dropped off.
Diversity – is it already enough?
Overall, people may seem tired from seeing the same people or the most popular tv shows winning. Also, the lack of diversity seems to be a big problem for award shows in general. We do see improvement on it, but it is still a long way to go. Not only on voters, but there are a lot of nonwhite talented people being snubbed every year, and people are tired of it. How relevant is this award show then?
In October last year, the awards admitted 21 new voters, being six of them were black. The HFPA hopes that the Golden Globes can be broadcast in 2023, but there’s still a lot to improve. The 79th and latest edition, of the Golden Globes, took place on January 9, 2022. After last years’ edition, we wanted to know if the Golden Globes will maintain its relevance, or maybe it is already threatened.
2022 Golden Globes Highlights
Standout winners include Billie Eilish and Finneas for Best Original Song, Motion Picture for “No Time To Die”. O Yeong-su from Netflix’s Squid Game, who won for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Series was a great highlight of the night.
However, it is good to remember that Squid Game actor Lee Jung-jae boycotted the Golden Globes. He was one of the competitors in the Best Actor category but decided not to attend the ceremony.
Viewers may say that the 2022 Golden Globes didn’t flop like last years’, but we can agree that the golden days have already passed by, once people are every day more critical about the ceremony. Besides all the controversies, the Golden Globes may survive in broadcasting next year according to HFPA.
