Sustainability Must Fight Fast Fashion

In recent years, the fashion market has been opening up to changes and adapting to new realities. This way, it is possible to find several companies with more sustainable products and services in the industry today.

You may have seen many new fashion brands that support transparency and eco-consciousness. The scenario seems optimistic, and consumers are increasingly looking for these brands.

Although, the global fast fashion market is expected to grow from $91.23 billion in 2021 to $99.23 billion in 2022 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 8.8%. We know this is a very harmful industry, and mass clothing production is one of sustainability’s biggest enemies.

More Collections, More Consumerism

Unlike slow fashion, the fast model is based on producing a large number of clothing collections.

We previously discussed this on our blog. In 2020, a research on the Social Responsibility Report of China’s Textile and Apparel Industry showed that those major fast fashion companies – such as H&M, Zara, and Forever 21 – release around 14 collections per year. That means more than 1 per month.

Trends go by really fast, encouraging people to buy more to have the pieces of the moment.

It’s like a cycle: a new trend appears; the big fast fashion companies produce the clothing; in a short period, a new trend is up. This cycle is the best for the fast fashion mindset because the materials are cheap and low quality. So, not only do people want to buy more to be on the latest style but also because these pieces don’t last long.

Will We See a Decline in Fast Fashion?

Hassan Pierre, CEO & Co-Founder Of Maison De Mode, analyzes this situation:  “Hopefully, at one point, as the market for sustainable fashion grows and starts to eat into the traditional fashion space, then we will see a decline in fast fashion.”

Will Gen Z Help Save the Industry?

As we said before, fashion is going to a different reality regarding sustainability. In fact, young customers are more attentive to untransparent brands.

According to Emma Bedford, in a rolling survey conducted in the United Kingdom between April 2020 and April 2021, more than two-thirds of Gen Z consumers stated that they would be willing to pay more for food and drink products that are environmentally friendly. In contrast, that figure stood at around 53 percent for Baby Boomers.

Even though Tik Tok trends influence quick and constant clothes purchases, it is possible to see a sustainable future guided by young people. After all, according to Bloomberg, TikTok stars and YouTube gamers are part of a new wave of young influencers promoting climate change awareness.

Maison De Mode the Future of Sustainable Fashion in 2022

Sustainable fashion has several characteristics – from a transparent supply chain to careful shipping to the final consumer. Here is the advice to run a green business and ensure it stays commuted with the cause.

“We have standards in place for our business that all brands we work with must adhere to, such as making their shipments carbon neutral”, – says CEO & Co-Founder Of Maison De Mode.

Policies

We know that a company impacts several pillars of its employee’s life, and an ecological philosophy can bring optimistic change for all. On Maison De Mode, they “do this by having an inclusive workspace where all team members can share their ideas and bring in their ethical practices to the workspace.”

Besides that, the CEO also shares: “We maintain the belief that what resonates with one personally should reflect professionally.”

Transparency

When buying a sustainable garment, people often seek transparency about the origin of that product. Hassan Pierre shared how they guarantee its ethical commitment to the planet to the consumer.

Maison De Mode vends all the brands they work with and ensures that they all meet the ethical standards they claim. “Due diligence is one of the most important things when it comes to accurately vetting brands that are communicating about ethical or sustainable practices,” affirms Hassan Pierre.
