What Artificial Intelligence Really is?

read 3 min

Many people think that alternative intelligence is something out of this world. The truth is that this field of study is getting closer and closer to us. In fact, AI is almost everywhere and significantly impacts our lives.

In this article, you will better understand artificial intelligence technologies, how does it take place in our daily and how it is present in the fashion industry. Keep reading!

WHAT DOES ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MEAN?

Artificial Intelligence – or just AI – is a technological advance that allows systems to simulate human-like intelligence.

According to Britannica, this term is frequently used for “the project of developing systems endowed with the intellectual processes characteristic of humans, such as the ability to reason, discover meaning, generalize, or learn from past experience.”

In other words, AI learns just like a child. Gradually, the system absorbs, analyzes and organizes the data to understand and identify all kinds of objects, people, patterns and reactions.

ALAN TURING: THE COMPUTER SCIENCE’S FATHER

Studies say that the earliest substantial work in artificial intelligence was done in the mid-20th century by the British logician and computer pioneer Alan Mathison Turing. “In 1935, Turing described an abstract computing machine consisting of a limitless storage and a scanner that moves back and forth through the memory, symbol by symbol, reading what it finds and writing further symbols”, says a Britannica research.

The article says that Turing gave quite possibly the earliest public lecture (London, 1947) to mention computer intelligence, saying, “what we want is a machine that can learn from experience.” Consequently, in 1948 he introduced many of the central concepts of AI in a report entitled “Intelligent Machinery.”

THE TURING TEST

Turing invented his namesake test in 1950, forming the basis of what we call AI today by asking whether a machine could mimic human thought. The Turing test involves three participants: a computer, a human interrogator, and a human foil.

Just because the system finds an answer that seems understandable doesn’t mean it really understands it. The Turing test has led many scientists and engineers to think about what makes us truly human.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE ON OUR DAILY

It may not seem like it, but artificial intelligence is much more accessible than it looks. There are a lot of mobile and desktop apps that people use that have AI on them. It is important to remember that it is also related to robotics, Machine Learning, speech and vision recognition, among other technologies.

VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS

AI can be the voice assistants people talk to through smartphones or smart speakers. Daily, these assistants help users search for information online, play music, or answer basic questions.

X-RAY

Many radiologists already use AI-powered tools to analyze X-rays, find anomalies, and diagnose patients more quickly and, perhaps, even more accurately.

ID RECOGNITION

Many security devices use facial recognition. One of the examples of artificial intelligence is the latest generation of cell phones, which have this security mechanism.

MEDIA & ADS RECOMMENDATIONS

Think about when you finish a movie on Netflix or a video on Youtube. The streaming service will display other movies and videos you may enjoy watching next. Also, AI can determine our interests by tracking statistics and serving ads based on those statistics.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN FASHION

There are many technological innovations that change the way the fashion industry is produced. Artificial intelligence in this sector is linked to the use of these technologies in the textile industry, for example. According to The Tech Fashionista, “AI fundamentally alters the sector, from how fashion businesses make their items to promote and sold.”

In addition, consumer interest and consumption data serve as the basis for the ability to predict trends. Fashion brands must keep up with the trends, topics, interests, and products the social media audience likes or dislikes.

In fact, artificial intelligence contributes to the direction of information and also to the understanding of patterns. It includes costs, production time, expenditure per part and other metrics that are fundamental for good management.

That is why fashion tech startups are really promising in the market. AI is one of the resources that can be built by companies to improve supply chain resources or processes in fashion. Are you one of these people?

SUSTAINABILITY

Digitization and sustainability are increasingly essential in fashion. By the way, this is one of the most polluting industries in the world. In this way, technological innovations that use AI can help reduce waste and overproduction by using digitization processes such as 3D piloting in design creations.
